Live Your Life

As a little girl, it was always my nature to please others. It was important to me that my friends, teachers, family, parents, etc. be happy with me and my actions. If my parents gave me a spanking for disobedience, that was one thing. However, it was unbearable for them to look at me with sadness in their eyes and say, "Christina, I'm disappointed in you". I would rather take the spanking any day over that.
Even though it caused me grief on many occasions, I went through my childhood and teenage years doing my best to please all the people in my life and molding my actions accordingly.

Unfortunately, I'd already entered adulthood before I realized the impossibility of such a task and decided to stop caring so much about what others thought. I wish I'd learned sooner that there is only one person who I should worry about pleasing in my life: God. Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-39, "...Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself ". If I obey the greatest commandment and love God, I'll please Him. If I love God I'll do my best to obey the second commandment in this passage and, in doing so, please others.

I know that even when I'm doing my best to love others, sometimes they're still displeased with my actions. But I no longer let that stress me out. If I'm right with God, then all is right with my world. I recently came across the following quote by Theodor Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss!) that sums it up perfectly: " Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind". Love God, love others, and live your life.
