Becoming Like Him

As Christians we're daily trying to become more Christlike. Perhaps you have a mental list of things you're trying to do to reach that goal. It could include things like, filling your mind with godly thoughts, avoiding areas of temptation, or holding your tongue if it tends to get you in trouble. Although there's nothing wrong with "trying hard" to do something, often simply trying isn't enough to accomplish it. We're humans, and as such are prone to failure and mistakes. Focusing so much on the "trying" can set you up for disappointment, which sometimes leads to the desire to give up.

We can't do anything in our own power, only Christ in us can help us accomplish our goals. Instead of focusing on trying to be like Christ, we should focus on building a deeper relationship with Him. If we have a right relationship with God, we yield to the Holy Spirit who lives in us, and we react to situations around us in a godly way. The closer we draw to God, the Bible reading and prayer that is essential to that process will be a joy and not merely a Christian duty we have to complete.

James 4:8 says, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you." Stop trying to be a good Christian and start building your relationship with God. Yielding to Him will cause you to be like Him.

In Christ,
