For the last few weeks since the controversial story broke, I’ve been thinking about the family of Trayvon Martin. Each time I hear his story, my heart sinks. This was somebody’s baby. I’ve even found myself fighting thoughts that one of my sons is that of 17-year-old Trayvon.
At one point of watching Trayvon Martin’s story on the news, I felt hopeless. My thoughts: “Every day I strive to teach my young black boys to grow up to be strong Christian black men; but what’s the point if on their way to the nearest 7Eleven, they will be shot down like a stray dog?”
As always, the Holy Spirit intercepts my thoughts and reminds me that God is in control of my life and the life of my boys. As the mother of AJ and Isaiah, my job is to give them back to the Lord and keep them in His will until they depart from my home. I Samuel 1: 27-28, “For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him. Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshiped the LORD there.”
While the world wants me to shield my “little black boys”, God reminds me to place my sons in His will at all times. As much as I want to protect my boys from all harm, only God is their eternal protector. I will continue to teach them to grow to be faithful Christian men, and trust that God guides their little footsteps.
To the family of Trayvon Martin, you are in our daily prayers.
