Lately the DC metropolitan area has been experiencing days punctuated by high winds. Last week, on one of those days, our lights flickered several times before powering off completely. At the time I was in the bathroom getting ready for bed. I knew the entire block was without power since it was unusually dark with no illumination coming in from the street lights. We keep candles around the bathtub, so I found some matches and lit one. Light flooded the bathroom so brightly that my husband asked if I’d lit two candles. “Just one” I replied as I started washing my face.
As Christians, we’re commanded to bring light to a sin darkened world. Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven”. Let's explore some of the characteristics of light. First of all, most light generates heat. Have you ever tried to change a light bulb right after it blew out? I usually have to wait a minute or two for the bulb to cool down before unscrewing it. This translates to the very thing Krystal talked about last week: passion. If we're to be an effective light we should be passionate about the things of God, we should be on fire for Him. Passion like that can't help but spread to others. Also, light is difficult to hide in the dark. When you're around your unsaved friends and family members do you stand out? Can they tell something is different about you by the way you act and speak? Or do you hide your light so that you'll blend in with them? Lastly, light leads the way. When I was young my friends and I played hide and seek at nighttime with all the lights off. We used flashlights to find our spot, and then sat in the dark waiting to be found. Sometimes I hadn't found my spot by the time the seeker stopped counting. In those instances my flashlight led the seeker right to me. Similarly, our lives should lead others to Christ. We should be a light that illuminates the pathway to Heaven.
Our world is progressively moving farther from God with each passing day. Determine to be a light to those stumbling in the darkness of sin and point them to a loving God who wants to give them salvation.
