Debt

My mother taught my brothers and me early on the value of a dollar and how to cautiously take care of our finances. And it wasn’t until I was ready to purchase my first car in college that I realized the importance of having great credit. Now as a parent, I am striving to instill the same values in my boys. It is so significant to put your priorities first, and limit your debt.

With all of the easy access to credit cards, loans, and cash advances, it is so easy to collect debt. And sadly, many times the things we place on credit cards are material wants and not needs. But isn’t it about time that we get our priorities together and eliminate as much debt as we can? What do I mean by priorities? Well, is it really smart to go on a shopping spree with your Christmas bonus versus getting new tires on your car? Or should you really increase the limit on your credit card to purchases more Christmas gifts? Many times, these things give us an instant gratification. But think long term.

The Bible reminds us that the more debt you consume, the more that you are indebted to someone else, “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender,” (Prov 22:7).

I am not saying that having debt is the devil. Many of us have debt in some form, including me. I am indebted to my lender for my first home loan. Most significant of all, every person has a sin debt to be paid. At the end of each life we will all stand before God alone and He will require a payment for the sin debt of each person and the Bible is clear that ALL have sinned” (Rom 3:23). So if we are all sinners how much does sin debt cost? Scripture says that “the wages of sin is death” (Rom 6:23). So how will you pay your debt?

Just as we take the time to remember to assure that debt does not affect us negatively, we must also take the time to evaluate how our sin debt will be paid. If you have trusted in Jesus and the payment that He made for all of those who would accept it, by shedding His blood on the cross you have an eternity in Heaven to look forward to. If you have not, this would be a good time (and maybe the last time) to become free of sin and the debt you owe for it. Jesus died, was buried, and He rose from the grave to give every person an opportunity to have their debt paid in full and spend an eternity in Heaven “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Rom 10:13).

Will you repay your debt?
