I hope all of you LOV readers are enjoying the new year, because I know I am! It's the perfect time to reflect on the past twelve months and implement change as needed, and it's always needed. There's always some area of my life that could use a little work. I don't make resolutions so to speak, but I do set goals to work toward for the rest of the year. One of my goals was highlighted during watchnight service on New Year's Eve. Among other activities, watchnight at my church entails listening to short messages brought by men in the church who've been called to preach. One young man named Marcus preached from Ecclesiastes 10:18, "By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through". This really spoke to me since I could use improvement in this area.
Ever since I was young I've leaned toward procrastination. The majority of the time I complete assignments and meet deadlines, but I generally have to burn the midnight oil to do so. Sometimes it's a time management issue and the project takes longer than I anticipated. Sometimes circumstances force me to start later than I want to. But more often than not, I simply don't feel like doing the appointed task and therefore put it off as long as possible. The Bible calls this slothfulness or, in present day terms, laziness! To me this seems a harsh assessment for putting off a task, but sometimes, as the saying goes, the truth hurts. And putting off tasks has been detrimental to me in the past. Usually the time to get the task done was available, but I'd rather be idle and do something else than start something I dread.
This verse uses a house to illustrate the negative results of being lazy and idle. If you don't maintain your house it will suffer and start to fall apart. In the same way if you don't do what needs to be done, it will negatively affect you and others around you, such as your family. It can hold you back from advancement and reflects negatively on your character.
I don't want to hurt myself and my family through laziness and procrastination. Life is full of necessary chores that have to be done regardless of anything. I plan to tackle them head on ASAP with a good attitude, then I can focus on the more enjoyable tasks :-) In 2012 decide to handle your business.
