Birthdays are loads of fun when you're a child. The promise of cake, ice cream, decorations, and gifts spell paradise for most kids. My daughter Jadyn celebrated her 4th birthday last Friday. For most of August she see-sawed between happiness because her birthday was coming and sadness because it was taking too long to arrive.
As we become adults, birthdays tend to lose some of their charm. If you have a family, they tend to be your focus and the last thing on your mind is planning how to celebrate your birthday. The promise of cake and ice cream is replaced with the promise of gray hairs and fine lines. In a society driven by youth and looks this can be a hard pill to swallow. We want to grow older and live a long full life, but dread the changes that age will bring to our bodies and appearance.
My birthday is this Sunday...September 11. It's a happy and a sad day for me. Happy because it means God has allowed me to see another year on this earth. Sad because on that day nearly ten years ago thousands of people were killed, never to see another birthday again. They got up that morning and went about their usual routine just like any other day, unaware that they were doing it for the last time. The Bible says in James 4:14, "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away". Compared to the eternal life we'll experience after death, our earthly life is a mere breath in the timeline of our total existence. We don't know how long that breath will last, so we should enjoy every day and not take the ones we love for granted.
I'm going to enjoy my birthday this Sunday. It's a blessing to add another year to my age. I hope you'll take a moment to remember those who needlessly died on that day. Thank God that you weren't among their number and for all the days He's given you. That's what I'm going to do.
