Inspiration

Our goal for LOV is to inspire and encourage everyday women to learn more about God’s virtue for their lives. In addition, we want you to witness the testimonies of women and how they are able to overcome sickness, heartache, loss, and difficulties because of their faith in the Lord. In the future, LOV will feature more testimonies of everyday women striving to become virtuous. If you would like to share your Christ-centered testimony or know someone who has one, please feel free to email me at alston.krystalp@gmail.com and your story might be featured on the blog. You never know how your testimony can encourage another woman to keep pushing.

Now, tonight’s post is a testimony that I believed is crucial for all of us to read. I stumbled on this article on Facebook from an old friend and the story literally had me in tears. This story is not written by me or Co-Author Christina Gibbs; however, I felt it was crucial to share. Special thanks to author, Ashley Hardrick for writing and Kortney Holland, for being an inspiration. The title pretty much says it all; “A Girl Called Courage.”

“A Girl Called Courage" by Ashley Hardrick

Reggie White- “God places the heaviest burden on those who can carry its weight.”

The definition of Courage is also known as bravery, fortitude, will, and intrepidity, it is the ability to confront fear, pain, risk/danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Since the beginning of time I believe God placed different people to be the leaders of courage and strength. Martin Luther King in the face of racism and, Ghandi in the face of injustice .These people have shown what they were made of in spite of the hard times they were going through. However, even though these people are major figures in our history I believe their is always a smaller hero. A person who has been thirsty and smelled rain, a person who smiles when they feel pain, a person who prays when they want to yell. I nicknamed her “courage”.

A native of Bowie, Maryland she’s 21 and a international business major at Hofstra University. Her graduation date is in December 2011, and it has been a rocky season for her. As long as she can remember her mom, Lynn Holland has had Cancer which started from a spinal tumor. She has been battling cancer for several years now. But would fight it and defeat it. Last 2010, her mom went in for treatment again because the cancer returned to attack her.” It was the hardest thing for her to deal with “ Sarvi Javid, a close friend of hers notes .“ I’d Never forget how faithful she was, she prayed for her mom everyday”.

Even as a student seeing this positive young lady on a day-to-day basis, I noted that she always had a smile on her face. She continued to lead her Strictly Steppin Team and sing in Hofstra’s Gospel Ensemble. Her other close friends Niani Mimms, and Krystn Niona tells me she was in Hammer every chance she got keeping up with her studies. When she wasn’t doing that she was making people laugh and flashing her Colgate smile to everyone she could. Her energy is indescribable. Something that you want to grab for yourself. Amongst, that she supported her family on weekends by traveling four hours to be with her mom and her family. She never complained once. Why? you ask? Kortney says “everyday she wanted to make her mom proud and live for her mom”. She walked everyday with faith and always thought of God and her mom to move her steps. On October 17th, 2010, the night of a friend’s birthday party ,Kortney planned on going out that night. As they were getting ready, her brother Kyle called her and told he ”Kort I don’t know how long mom has, the doctors sent her home”. Kortney says she contemplated whether she should go home that night or in the morning. Her friends prayed for her and she decided that she would go home that night. She left at 8:00 p.m , the ride home was a lonely one. Kortney was racing home she did not care if she got stopped by a police officer. She believed their chance that she wasn’t going make it. She asked” What she was going to do without her mother? How can she continue on without her?” Her main focus was to go home: as her brother kept texting her, asking her how close she was keeping her posted.

40 minutes from her destination she receives a call. The earth seems to stand still at that moment because her mom ,Lynn Holland passed away that night. It was a sad time for her. Three days after the funeral she came back to school and her reason was “My mom would have wanted me to”. To finish her school career, not to take a well-deserved break that she could have taken. And now just one semester shy of graduating she has truly made it and grown. So I call her courage. For her smile, that she remained to have, even though exams were stressful and times were rough. For her drive, never giving up when no one would have blamed her if she wanted to. For her faith , never giving up on God, praying for her mother everyday and continuing to be the best daughter and student that she can be and, lastly for her strength that caught the attention of myself and other students at Hofstra. What she taught me and the people she touched at Hofstra was to remained strong . Her courage was strength in the face of pain and grief.*Just wanna thank Kort Kort for being m inspiration for this piece...journalism assignment*
